The whole province boasts a total of 131 universities, with an enrollment of 438,600 undergraduate students and students of junior college level each year with 1,334,100 students at school. For full-time postgraduate education, there was an enrollment of 24,500 students, an increase of 15.77% than that in the last year, and a number of 65,900 students at school, an increase of 12.01% than that in the last year. The gross enrollment rate for higher education was 27.5%, an increase of 0.5 percentage point than that in the last year.

Guangdong University of Foreign Studies

Evolved from the original Guangzhou Institute of Foreign Languages and the Guangzhou Institute of Foreign Trade, GDUFS has become a key university in Guangdong Province with a broad international reputation in foreign language and trade education. After more than 40 years’ development, the university now has 3 campuses, totaling 145 hectares in area, admitting over 30000 students per year. It is a university: oriented to teaching research and its well-known subjects include finance, trade, business administration and foreign languages; known for featuring outstanding foreign language teaching, offering 13 foreign language programs; boasting a long list of provincial key majors; providing all-English programs in the areas of International Business, Chinese Business Culture and MBA program; leading in the area of graduate employment with a rate of 99% , with its graduates being active in all trades and business; authorized by the Nation to conduct China''s HSK (Chinese language proficiency test).

Guangzhou Medical University

Guangzhou Medical University (GMU),formerly known as Guangzhou Medical College, founded in 1958, is a medical institution which offers a full range of programs at graduate and undergraduate levels. The main campus of GMU is located in the downtown of Guangzhou City, the new campus in Panyu District is under construction. GMU began to enroll international undergraduate students for English-taught clinical medicine programs in 2010 and was authorized to admit Chinese Government Scholarship students in 2014. GMU has 15 schools, 8 affiliated hospitals and11 non-directly affiliated hospitals. GMU offers 19 full-time undergraduate programs, 5 Level-I master degree granting programs, 35 Level-II master degree granting programs, 1 Level-I doctorial degree granting programs and 1 post-doctorial research station. GMU enjoys extensive international exchanges, it has created good cooperation and exchange with more than 19 universities and research intuitions in foreign countries and districts in academic exchanges activities and research collaborations.

Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine

Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, one of the 4 oldest TCM universities established after the foundation of P. R. China, was founded on September 25th 1956. After more than a half century’s effort, it has developed from a pure TCM institute into a university with TCM as the main body and the harmonious development of multi-disciplines. In 2002, its undergraduate education was assessed by the Ministry of Education of P. R. China as excellent. In 2004, it was included into “211 Project” of Guangdong Province. In 2006, the main body of the university moved to the new campus in the University Town and each facility has been improved and expanded unprecedentedly and the education capacity is further strengthened. In 2008, its undergraduate education was assessed by the Ministry of Education of P. R. China as excellent again.

Jinan University

Jinan University was founded in 1906 and currently has altogether 4 campuses in Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Zhuhai and is building a new campus in Guangzhou. The University has 25 colleges, 58 departments,177 research institutes, 84 laboratories, 15 postdoctoral stations and 1 postdoctoral research station. The University is also home to 17 affiliated hospitals, a number of national key disciplines, research and education centers, project centers and key laboratories. Jinan University has 1,869 teaching staff, among which 2 are academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 6 are academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 504 are professors and 692 are associate professors. Currently there are altogether 46,949 students coming from 93 countries and regions. The number of overseas students totals 11,828, which is the highest in China.

Shantou University

Shantou University (STU), founded in 1981 with the approval of the State Council, is a key comprehensive university under the "211 Project" in the Guangdong province. It is a university co-developed by the Ministry of Education, People’s Government of the Guangdong Province, and the Li Ka Shing Foundation. It is also the only public university in the world which is continually supported by a private foundation—the Li Ka Shing Foundation. Currently there are 9 schools and colleges, 5,113 faculty members and medical workers, and 9,448 full-time students in STU. Shantou University Medical College (SUMC), an important part of Shantou University (STU), exists to lead by being student-centered in medical education; patient-centered in health service delivery; application-centered in biomedical and clinical research; public interest-centered in community services; faculty and staff-centered for sustainable development of SUMC. At present, SUMC has 203 full-time faculty members, among whom 88% hold a graduate degree and 45% have international experience either by studying or working abroad. SUMC offers seven-year programs in Clinical Medicine, a five-year program in Clinical Medicine, a four-year program in Nursing, and an English-instructed program in Clinical Medicine (MBBS) specially tailored to international students. Now there are 2,553 students enrolled in the medical programs at SUMC. SUMC has five affiliated hospitals and five associated partner hospitals.

South China Normal University

Founded in 1933, South China Normal University (SCNU) is a prestigious university in Guangdong Province and a member of “Project 211.” It is a comprehensive university, consisting of diverse branches of learning, such as philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, and management. The University has 30 schools and colleges, and offers 73 undergraduate programs, 175 graduate programs, and 90 doctoral programs. SCNU is strong in Teacher-training, Pedagogy, and Psychology etc. In recent years,SCNU has been striving to promote the innovation and development in all disciplines in efforts to build itself into a high quality teaching research university and serve the local society. In 2012, there were 25,479 undergraduates, 6779 postgraduates and 643 doctoral candidates. There were also on campus approximately 1000 long-term international students from about 50 countries every year. Among them, there are over 300 Degree-Seeking students. There are 3 multi-functional libraries on three campuses with more than 3.1 million books.

South China University of Technology

South China University of Technology (SCUT) is one of China's leading universities. It operates under the direct leadership of the State Ministry of Education; It is also a member of ‘Project 985’ and ‘Project 211’ which qualifies it as a top institution in teaching and research. In 2012, SCUT entered the top 500 with chemistry ranked in top 200, and engineering even ranked in top 150. The international status of SCUT has improved strikingly and the university is competitive enough to play a role in international society. SCUT is located in Guangzhou, near Hong Kong and Macau. It has two campuses: the north campus in Tianhe District is in an attractive area, with rolling hills, lakes, lush greenery and brilliant flowers. The campus architecture is a mixture of both traditional and modern design. The south campus is located in University Town in Panyu, which has an open and spacious environment, featuring extensive landscaping and innovative architecture.

Southern Medical University

Southern Medical University, located in Guangzhou, formerly the First Military Medical University, was founded in 1951. It renamed Southern Medical University in 2004. The University began to enroll Chinese Government Scholarship students and international undergraduate students for English-taught clinical medicine programs in 2006. It was designated as a national key university. The University has 17 schools, 6 affiliated hospitals and 47 non-directly affiliated hospitals. It has 7 post-doctoral research stations. If offers 75 doctoral programs, 98 postgraduate programs and 49 undergraduate programs. The number of the University faculty is more than 6000. Among over 19,000 students enrolled, 900 are international students. The University enjoys extensive international exchanges. It has created good cooperation and exchange with more than 30 universities and research institutions in foreign countries and districts in academic exchanges activities, lad cooperation and students exchange.

Sun Yat-sen University

Sun Yat-sen (Zhongshan) University, located in Guangzhou City - the largest city in south China and closed to Hong Kong and Macao, was founded by Dr. Sun Yat-sen (Zhongshan being his alias), the great leader of the democratic revolution in China. With a history of more than 100 years, she is a key and multi-disciplines university entitled the projects of “985” and “211” under the Ministry of Education, ranking as one of the major universities in the country and at the top in South China. The University has four campuses: the Guangzhou South & North Campuses, the Guangzhou East Campus (located in the University Town) and the Zhuhai Campus. There are 32 schools or colleges and 5 departments directly under the University. At the undergraduate level, courses are offered in 102 subject areas; at the graduate level, Master’s degree are conferred in 251 subjects areas and doctorates in 180.

The Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts

Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts(GAFA),the only one of its kind in South China, is the predecessor of Central South College of Fine Arts, a merger of South China Institute of Art and Literature in Guangzhou, Central South Institute of Art and Literature in Wuhan, and the Guangxi Institute of Art. The merger, which was initiated in 1953, in 1958 and was renamed as Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. In the same year, the school began to enroll undergraduate students. The Academy is directly under the provincial government of Guangdong. The bachelor degree education includes 11 disciplines and 38 directions. The Master degree studies boasts three degree programs (Fine Arts Studies, Design Studies, and Art Studies), and one professional Master degree program. There is a student population of more than 7,600, which consists of 5,127 regular undergraduate students, 462 full-time graduate students, 60 serving graduate students, and 1,960 students of adult education.
