About Guangdong

Bordering on the South China Sea, Guangdong is China’s most southern province on mainland with a coastline of over 4,300 kilometres. It consists of the continental part and off-shore Island and reefs, including Hainan Island and the South China Sea Islands. The province covers an area of more than 212,000 square kilometres and has a population of 104.3 million (2010). The region is inhabited by people of the Han, Li, Yao, Zhuang, Miao, Hui, Manchu and She nationalities. Guangdong Province's capital is Guangzhou,the host city of 2010 Asian Games.

Guangdong has tropical and subtropical monsoon climate with long time summer and abundant rainfall. The Leizhou Peninsula is in the tropical zone.

Education

The whole province boasts a total of 131 universities, with an enrollment of 438,600 undergraduate students and students of junior college level each year with 1,334,100 students at school. For full-time postgraduate education, there was an enrollment of 24,500 students, an increase of 15.77% than that in the last year, and a number of 65,900 students at school, an increase of 12.01% than that in the last year. The gross enrollment rate for higher education was 27.5%, an increase of 0.5 percentage point than that in the last year.

Guangdong University of Foreign Studies

Evolved from the original Guangzhou Institute of Foreign Languages and the Guangzhou Institute of Foreign Trade, GDUFS has become a key university in Guangdong Province with a broad international reputation in foreign language and trade education. After more than 40 years’ development, the university now has 3 campuses, totaling 145 hectares in area, admitting over 30000 students per year. It is a university: oriented to teaching research and its well-known subjects include finance, trade, business administration and foreign languages; known for featuring outstanding foreign language teaching, offering 13 foreign language programs; boasting a long list of provincial key majors; providing all-English programs in the areas of International Business, Chinese Business Culture and MBA program; leading in the area of graduate employment with a rate of 99% , with its graduates being active in all trades and business; authorized by the Nation to conduct China''s HSK (Chinese language proficiency test).

Guangzhou Medical University

Guangzhou Medical University (GMU),formerly known as Guangzhou Medical College, founded in 1958, is a medical institution which offers a full range of programs at graduate and undergraduate levels. The main campus of GMU is located in the downtown of Guangzhou City, the new campus in Panyu District is under construction. GMU began to enroll international undergraduate students for English-taught clinical medicine programs in 2010 and was authorized to admit Chinese Government Scholarship students in 2014. GMU has 15 schools, 8 affiliated hospitals and11 non-directly affiliated hospitals. GMU offers 19 full-time undergraduate programs, 5 Level-I master degree granting programs, 35 Level-II master degree granting programs, 1 Level-I doctorial degree granting programs and 1 post-doctorial research station. GMU enjoys extensive international exchanges, it has created good cooperation and exchange with more than 19 universities and research intuitions in foreign countries and districts in academic exchanges activities and research collaborations.

Scholarship

With the aim of encouraging increasing outstanding overseas students to study in Guangdong, promoting development of Guangdong High Education Management of Foreign Students, advancing International influence of Guangdong High Education, “Outstanding Foreign Student Scholarship” has been set up by Guangdong Government to award foreign full-time students with excellent school performances.

Requirements for application

The applicant must satisfy following conditions:
1.Undergraduate students currently reading in full-time courses and with formal academic qualification(freshmen students are not included).
2. Students need to have foreign nationality, supply valid foreign passport and visa.
3. Acquired fundamental Chinese Language Proficiency and supply relevant proof(Students studying in English-taught-program could relax this restriction in appropriate way).
4. Age under 40 years old.
5. Passed in all subjects of compulsory courses and no disciplinary records in the last academic year.
6. Have not gained or awarded with any other scholarship during the academic year.

FAQ

What is Mandarin Chinese? Is it the same as Chinese language?

Mandarin Chinese is also called " Pu tong hua" , meaning common speech. which is based on Northern dialect. It is official language. But Chinese language has other dialects. The vocabulary and grammar are basically the same, but pronunciation is different.
